Zurich lies at the heart of Europe, on the north shore of Lake Zurich. The multicultural charm and variety of recreational options attract visitors from all over the world to this “shortcut region”. Zurich is very easy to get to – whether by train, plane or car. The international airport serves 150 destinations, and a 10-minute train ride takes you from the airport to the centrally located Zurich Central Station, which is the center of all European rail traffic. 370,000 inhabitants inhabit this scientific, cultural and business center. Thanks to its highly developed infrastructure and natural surroundings, the city is popular with students and researchers. For example, the Swiss State Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) at the University of Zurich, which was founded in 1855 by Gottfried Semper, is now associated with 21 Nobel laureates.
About 150 years ago, part of the city’s fortifications were rebuilt into what is now perhaps the world’s most famous “Station Street” – Bahnhofstrasse. Zurich’s Shopping Mile helped establish the city’s reputation as a shopper’s paradise and serves as an address for top international brands, jewelers and watchmakers. But it’s only one place where you’ll find Zurich’s urban brands; to the west of the city, or in the Aussersihl district, you’ll often stumble across local brands – and in the places you least expect it. Many of them inspire fashionistas well beyond Switzerland’s borders, like the iconic Freitag, with its unique and instantly recognizable style of accessories and bags.
Zurich has Switzerland’s highest concentration of clubs-it’s never too late! From house parties at the legendary Kaufleuten to 80s hits at Mascotte, one of the city’s oldest clubs, to gay parties at Labor Bar, the discos open after 11 p.m. and continue through the night. There’s no official closing time, and in the summer the nightlife spills out of the clubs to places where you can party hard by day and flirt and dance in the open air until dawn.
For art lovers, Zurich has 43 museums to offer. The Kunsthaus Zürich boasts an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, photography and videos. In addition there is an important collection of Alberto Giacometti. Another attraction is the Rietberg Museum: one of the leading centers for non-European art. Just a stone’s throw from the central station, the Swiss National Museum – in a century-old fairy-tale castle – houses the country’s most impressive collection of objects illustrating the history of Switzerland.
The living tradition of the merchant guilds in Zurich dates back to the Middle Ages. The most beautiful guild houses – such as the Zunfthaus zur Waag, which was built no later than 1303 – are consistently impressive. The Grossmünster Church, Lindenhof Square and Öpfelchammer in Niederdorf are now among the most important landmarks of the city.
