Between the alpine peaks and the hilly regions of the Jura, on the banks of the Rhone, where it leaves Lake Geneva, lies the French-speaking city of Geneva. Because of its great humanistic tradition and internationalist spirit, as well as the European headquarters of the United Nations and the headquarters of the Red Cross, the city is known as the “capital of peace.

The symbol of the “smallest metropolis” in the world is – Jet d’eau – a 140 meters high fountain that spouts from Lake Geneva. Most of the major hotels and many restaurants are located on the right bank of the lake (looking upstream of the Rhone). And the heart of Geneva – the old town, with the business district and the shopping street, extends along the left bank. St. Peter’s cathedral towers over the old city. But the true center of the old city is the Bourges-de-Four palace with the oldest square in the city. Quays, promenades along the lake, innumerable parks, small alleyways of the old town and elegant stores all invite travelers to take a long walk through the city. One of the best preserved streets is the Grand Rue. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born here. “Mouettes” – water cabs – are designed for a quick crossing from one shore to the other, and large ships for leisurely cruises on Lake Geneva.

Geneva is the most cosmopolitan city of Switzerland, not without reason the European headquarters of the UN is based here. The activities of the International Red Cross are also managed from here. Being a large congress center Geneva is a city of ancient culture and great history, where traditions are kept and unique exhibitions are held. And the world-famous symbol of Geneva watchmaking is the large Horloge Fleuri clock in the Jardin Anglais. The great city on the western edge of Switzerland has a lot to offer to connoisseurs of culture. Internationally renowned artists perform in the Grand Théâtre and the Geneva Opera, a wide variety of museums – such as the Musée international de l’horlogerie with its collection of musical and jewelry watches – and the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent which offers a glimpse into the world of humanitarian organizations.

A popular sightseeing spot for excursions, Mont Saleuve is already in neighboring France: a cable car takes visitors to a height of 1100 meters in just five minutes, offering incredible views of the city, Lake Geneva, the Alps, the Jura mountains and, the highest mountain in Europe (not counting Elbrus) – Mont Blanc.

Summer

Geneva is idyllically nestled between Alpine peaks and vineyards on Western Europe’s largest lake. It is the capital of the United Nations, the home of the great watch industry, and a magical place for tourism.
